Syllabus

Course Objectives

General objective

At the end of the course the student will be able to describe the fundamental nursing care interventions that can be planned and implemented in order to respond to the specific health needs of elderly people, as well as comprehensively design individualized care plans.
Specific objectives

1. Define the objectives of nursing care towards the elderly person and their family, as well as the areas of intervention of the Nurse.
2. Describe the Nurse role in the interdisciplinary team, with particular reference to OSS and OSS personnel with complementary training.
3. Describe the life activities of elderly people with health problems, with particular reference to total non-self-sufficiency.
4. Use the main assessment and appropriateness tools for the multidimensional assessment of the elderly.
5. Argue the importance of information systems, clinical-care appropriateness and critical thinking for care management.
6. Formulate Individualized Care Plans (IAP) for an elderly person, according to a multidisciplinary approach, according to the nursing care process, in accordance with the available scientific evidence.
Describe the principles, organizational methods and nursing role regarding territorial care: RSA, CDI, Community Hospitals, Intermediate care, Hospices, Rehabilitation Facilities.
8. Describe the principles, organizational methods and nursing role regarding home care: ADI, open RSA, Community Houses, with particular reference to the Lombard system and the figure of the Care manager.
9. Express the principles of treatment of pressure and vascular lesions of the elderly person, according to the AHCPR guidelines, with particular reference to the use of advanced dressings according to the logic of wound bed preparation (WBP).
10. Describe the problem of accidental falls in the elderly, outlining the areas of intervention of the Nurse in relation to the possibilities of prevention, also according to the indications of the Lombardy Region
11. Describe the methods of choosing and using protection and protection tools for the elderly, with particular reference to the technical and legal implications.
12. Evaluate the nutritional status of the elderly, prevent malnutrition and dehydration also through the choice of appropriate diets and administration techniques (natural and artificial).
13. Evaluate the elderly's urinary incontinence, choose and use the appropriate drainage and barrier devices, implement rehabilitation techniques.
14. Manage the vascular heritage of the elderly by choosing the most suitable times, accesses and aids, including deep vascular accesses with ultrasound-guided insertion.
15. Outline the role of the Nurse towards people suffering from cognitive fragility and dementia, at home, in RSA and in Alzheimer's Units, including some aspects of cognitive stimulation and collaborative roles with the figures of Psychologist, Educator, Occupational Therapist.

Course Prerequisites

Be enrolled in the degree course and have passed the qualifying exams

Teaching Methods

Teaching methodology

At the beginning of the course, the program will be discussed with the students, defining priorities and additions (classroom contract).
The lessons will be mainly frontal, although integrated with some demonstrations, moments of discussion and evaluation of experiences.
Group work will be proposed aimed at realizing a welfare case.
The exam will be in written form with multiple choice questions and automatic correction.

Formal: 30 multiple choice tests (triple, only one true) with automatic correction
