Course Objectives

General Objectives of the Integrated Course The Biology course aims to provide students with a solid and integrated foundation in the fundamentals of biology, which are an essential basis for understanding the physiological and pathological processes addressed in subsequent courses in the biomedical area. Specific Objectives of the Integrated Course Knowledge and Understanding At the end of the course, students will be able to:  Describe the structure and function of the main biological macromolecules and understand the molecular basis of living matter.  Understand cellular organisation and compartmentalisation, intracellular trafficking, and the interactions between cells and the external environment.  Illustrate the molecular and cellular mechanisms that regulate the expression and transmission of genetic and epigenetic information, identifying their implications in inherited pathologies. Illustrate the fundamentals of cellular communication and signal transduction, with particular attention to the control of cell proliferation and death, as well as the processes that regulate mitosis and meiosis in germ cells. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding At the end of the course, the student will be able to:  Apply the knowledge acquired to understand normal and pathological cellular processes relevant to the medical field.  Interpret experimental data relating to the structure and function of the cell and its various components, gene regulation, and intracellular and intercellular signalling mechanisms.  Use this knowledge and the methodological approaches acquired for future studies in the biomedical field. Making judgments At the end of the course, the student will be able to: 1. Critically evaluate information 2. Form informed opinions 3. Make independent decisions Communication skills: At the end of the course, the student will be able to: 1. Express their information and knowledge clearly and effectively Ability to Learning Upon completion of the course, students will be able to: 1. Learn independently and continuously 2. Update their skills and knowledge

Course Prerequisites

Knowledge of mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology is required, meeting the preparation standards promoted by educational institutions that organise educational and teaching activities consistent with the National Guidelines for High Schools and the Guidelines for Technical and Vocational Institutes.

Teaching Methods

Classes will be delivered both in person and remotely to ensure that all students enrolled in the Medicine and Surgery filter semester can attend. Before classes begin, scheduled for September 1st, 2025, instructions will be provided regarding classroom assignments for those wishing to attend in person, or the link for those wishing to attend remotely. Students will be provided with slides projected in the classroom by instructors during classes. As per ministerial guidelines, attendance is mandatory pursuant to Directives 2005/36/EC and 2013/55/EU.

Assessment Methods

The exams will be held on November 20th and December 10th, 2025, in accordance with the procedures established by the Ministry. For full details, please refer to Ministerial Decree 418 of May 30, 2025 (https://www.mur.gov.it/sites/default/files/2025-06/Decreto%20MInisteriale%20n.%20418%20del%2030-05-2025.pdf) and Annex 2 of Ministerial Decree 418 of May 30, 2025 (https://www.mur.gov.it/sites/default/files/2025-06/Decreto%20MInisteriale%20n.%20418%20Allegato%202.pdf).
