Syllabus

Course Objectives

To know the most common diseases with systemic pathological alterations as well as the systemic pathological pictures correlated with pathologies of odontostomatological relevance. To Know the main histopathological alterations and etiopathogenetic correlations of neoplastic and non-neoplastic diseases of the head and neck district.

Course Prerequisites

In order to be able to adequately address the pathological anatomy study and thus to undergo the examination, it is appropriate to have attended the courses and to have achieved the skills required to pass the exams of the first 2 years of the degree course, with particular reference to some fundamental teachings such as: a) Biology And genetics, b) Histology, c) Human anatomy, d) Human physiology

Teaching Methods

Case studies on diagnostic samples; journal clubs.
Teachers are available for clarification on the topics of the program.

Assessment Methods

Oral exam with multiple questions aimed at ascertaining the knowledge acquired on the anatomo-pathological features of the different pathologies in correlation with clinical, semeiological and laboratory-instrumental data and the ability to critically interpret the meaning of ancillary and molecular examinations in the diagnostic context. The assessment will also take into account the ability to communicate and use an appropriate scientific language

Introduction to anatomic pathology diagnostics.
Main diagnostic methodologies and ancillary techniques (immunohistochemistry, molecular and cytogenetic biology) in the pathology laboratory: basic technical principles and major application areas.
Elementary lesions in oral pathology, lichenoid and bullous diseases, leucoplakia and squamois cell carcinoma of the oral cavity, viral oncogenesis in head and neck pathology, neoplastic and non neoplastic pathology of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses, maxillary cysts, odontogenic cysts and tumors, beningn and malignant disease of the salivary glands, thyroid pathology, melanocytic lesions and melanoma, lymphadenopathiesa nd head and neck lymphomas, bone tumors, soft tissues tumors, diagnostic approach to cervical masses.
General concepts in cardio-vascular pathology, pulmonary pathology and liver pathology.
