Moving the soul through the immovable: dance and mimesis in fourth-century Greece

Chapter
Publication Date:
2017
abstract:
This paper discusses the mimetic character of ancient Greek dance, mainly analyzing technical terminology and theoretical discourses about choreia in ancient Greek sources. The abstract notion of nonkinetic poses (schemata) allowed analyzing dance into its minimal components, comparably to how alphabetical letters are used to dissect language and notes to examine melody.
