The lexicon of Cognition: some preliminary notes

Chapter
Publication Date:
2004
abstract:
The chapter takes into account the metaphorical projection of motion onto the domain of cognition. Similarly to real motion, metaphorical motion involves dynamic construal of space and time along with the exploitation of motion language, as, for example, dynamic and path prepositions, or motion verbs. What differs between the two is that, unlike real motion, metaphorical motion does not express any real physical movement in the space, that is, there is no literal motion of an entity. In metaphorical motion, instead, the conceptual domain of motion represents the source domain for the description and understanding of abstract target domain, as is the case with expressions like An idea crossed my mind, or All those memories flooded back into my mind.
