Retracing some "footsteps" on the road of the Italian Republican Constitution

Academic Article
Publication Date:
2019
abstract:
The aim of this article is to retrace some "footsteps" on the road of the Italian Republican Constitution of 1948, focusing attention on the liberal-democratic model which arose from arduous work of the founding fathers between June 1946 and December 1947. They laid the foundations for a new beginning. Then a troubled implementation of the Constitution followed. During that time there was also a growing succession of projects to reform the Constitutional Charter although these projects often failed to reach a final fruition and sometimes were rejected by a popular vote. "Everyone warns that the Constitution does not work, but we do not know how to correct it or replace it" said Ugo Spirito. However, the Italian Constitution of 1948 still appears today as the pact that binds Italians in freedom and democracy, beyond all reasons of division.
