Comprehensive historical and critical profile of the spread and development of professional literary philology in Hellenistic Age, from the early 3rd c. BC to the Augustan Age, with special focus on Ptolemaic Alexandria (context, background, trends, concepts, individuals, intellectual and methodological achievements). This chapter represents an enlarged and updated version of that published in 2015 as a part of the Brill’s Companion to Ancient Greek Scholarship.
