Administrative Traditions in Western Europe

This chapter traces some of the major hostorical developments that provide the background of today's public adminisration, focussing on the four largest European countries: France, Germany, Italy and the UK. Special attention is paid to to governamental penetration of civil society as reflected in the history of the last two centuries.
