Abstract:
The chapter is devoted to cases in Cognitive Grammar (henceforth CG). Cognitive approaches to cases are numerous, and by no means restricted to CG. Some other cognitive approaches are treated in separate chapters in this handbook. In this chapter, I frame views on grammatical forms common to various cognitive approaches in the framework of earlier research on the same topic (§ 1); I then briefly survey the context out of which CG originated (§ 2); and proceed to illustrate more specifically relevant assumption within the CG framework (§ 3). Finally, I provide some diachronic evidence for the CG approach to cases (§ 4).
