Navigare tra pellicola e carta: iconografie marine nel cinema e nei paratesti cinematografici

Il saggio mira a tracciare una mappa delle principali modalità di rappresentazione del mare nel cinema muto italiano, a partire dalle teorie di Bachelard e dal concetto dei cronotopi di Bachtin. Il mare è presente nei documentari paesaggistici, che offrono la possibilità di sperimentare nuove tecniche fotografiche oppure in quelli militari, dove costituisce un confine che deve essere difeso. Nei film di fiction, invece, il mare è evocato come spazio dell’avventura e dell’ignoto, oppure come riferimento alla tradizione letteraria. Il saggio verifica la centralità del tema marino attraverso un confronto sistematico con paratesti e materiali pubblicitari.

The essay aims to draw a map of the main ways of representing the sea in Italian silent cinema, starting from Bachelard's theories and Bachtin's concept of chronotopes. The sea is present in landscape documentaries – which offer the possibility of experimenting with new photographic techniques – or in military ones, where it constitutes a border that must be defended. In fiction movies the sea is evoked as a space of adventures, or as a reference to the literary tradition. The essay verifies the centrality of the marine theme through a systematic comparison with paratexts and advertising materials.
