Abstract:
The paper addresses the role that mountains play in Greek Comedy, both in a
literal and metaphorical sense. For each of these two connotations, three cases
will be discussed. The first section of the paper focuses on Cratinus’ Dionysalexandros,
Aristophanes’ Peace, and Menander’s Dyskolos. In each example the mountain
plays a different role: in the first one it is the setting of the play; in the second one
it represents a place to reach; in the third one it is a key element affecting the
protagonist’s behaviour. The second part of the paper deals with three instances
in which mountains are used as metaphors, metonymies or in refined wordplays.
