abstract:
This chapter deals with actors and actresses in the Roman theatre. The first part analyses the theatrical companies in which actors were organised and the various professional figures involved in the staging of performances: particular emphasis is given to the impresario, who acted as producer and manager, and sometimes also as leading actor. The second part focuses on the professional figures of actors and actresses (the latter limited to the theatrical category of mime), examining their ancient names, social status and training. Finally, some of the most famous actors and actresses known from ancient sources are presented.
