abstract:
In evaluating Rome’s glorious past, Augustine praises the excellence of the ancients from the point of view of resourcefulness (artes) and behavioral ethics (virtutes). This article interprets some passages from Augustinian works, in particular from De civitate Dei, to document the attitude of Augustine, who reads historical facts and figures aware of their historical importance even if devoid of the Christian perspective, the only one to confer am eternal glory.
