Abstract:
To testtheefficacyofanew 10B-vectorcompound,theB/Gd/LDLadductsynthesisedatTorino
University, in vivo irradiationsofmurinetumoursareinprogressattheTRIGAMarkIIreactorofthe
Pavia University.AlocalisedB16melanomatumourisgeneratedinC57BL/6miceandsubsequently
infused withtheadduct.Duringtheirradiation,themousewillbeputinashieldtoprotectthewhole
body exceptthetumourintheback-neckarea.Tooptimisethetreatmentset-up,MCNPsimulations
were performed.AverysimplifiedmousemodelwasbuiltusingMCNPgeometrycapabilities,aswellas
the geometryoftheshieldmadeof99% 10B enrichedboricacid.Aholeintheshieldisforeseenin
correspondenceoftheback-neckregion.Manyconfigurationsoftheshieldweretestedintermsof
neutronflux,dosedistributionandmeaninducedactivityinthetumourregionandintheradio-
sensitiveorgansofthemouse.Inthefinalset-up,uptofivemicecanbetreatedsimultaneouslyinthe
reactorthermalcolumnandtheneutronfluenceinthetumourregionfor10minofirradiationisof
about 51012 cm2.
