Examples of ditopic polyaza cages are reviewed and discussed, in which two metal cations can be hosted hand that can bind further bidentate anions between the two centres. The modification of the cages with fluorophores, or the use of partially open cages equipped with fluorophores opens the road to fluorescent anion sensing
