SUMMARY In the Orthopaedic Clinic of the University of Pavia , fron 1987 through 1990, 90 patients who complained patellofemorai pain underwent arthroscopic evaluation and subsequent lateral retinacuiar 215 release, which was arthroscopic in 57 cases and open in 33. Ali of he patients were exarnined after srgery Our results agree with the conclusions of other authors: laterai retinacular release has to be considered the elective surgery in adolescents and young adults whose patellofemoral pain is due to patellar malalignement with a Q-angle not greater than 200 and without advanced degenerative changes of patellar cartilage. Furthermore, our study has dernonstrated better results in the cases of open lateral retinacular release.
