Syllabus

Obiettivi Formativi

At the successful conclusion of this module, you should be able to demonstrate the following learning outcomes (LO):  MLO.1 Knowledge & Understanding: You will be able to demonstrate understanding of the principles of effective clinical communication (e.g. active listening, empathy, consent, shared decision-making).  MLO.2. Ability to Apply Knowledge and Understanding: You will be able to apply structured communication models (e.g. Calgary–Cambridge, SPIKES) in simulated clinical consultations.  MLO.3: Autonomy of Judgement: You will be able to recognise ethical challenges in communication (e.g. truth-telling, confidentiality, capacity and consent)  MLO.4. Communication Skills: You will be able to communicate clearly, respectfully, and compassionately. MLO.5. Learning Skills: You will be able to Identify personal communication strengths and areas for development through self-reflection and group discussion

Metodi didattici

Teaching methods include lectures, discussion and guided independent study. Lectures present key concepts (supports MLO.1, MLO.2), interactive discussion of clinical cases (supports MLO.2-3), guided readings and the e-learning platform (supports MLO.5). Teaching will include guidance to help you prepare for the exam (supports MLO.4) and throughout you will be presented with references to further readings and other materials to support your development (supports MLO.5).

Contenuti

This is a practice orientated communication skills module which will introduce you to structured communication models in clinical practice (e.g. Calgary–Cambridge, SPIKES) and, through role play and case discussion, provide you with the ability to develop effective communication skills in areas such as: involving the patient to establish a therapeutic relationship which supports a patient-centred approach, orienting your approach in line with the actual needs and concerns of the patient and collecting and communicate relevant information. Throughout the module you will be encouraged to reflect on and respect uncertainty as an integral part of reasoning and decision-making, develop your self-awareness, and your ability to communicate effectively in multi-disciplinary professional teams.
