Obiettivi Formativi
On successful completion of the module, students will be able to
demonstrate:
Knowledge and Understanding
LO.1 Describe the epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical
manifestations and principles of diagnosis and treatment of
major infectious diseases caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi
and parasites.
LO.2 Explain the principles of clinical management of common
infectious diseases, including antimicrobial therapy, supportive
treatment and preventive strategies.
Applying Knowledge and Understanding
LO.3 Recognise the typical clinical presentations of major
infectious diseases and integrate clinical features, laboratory
findings and epidemiological information to support diagnosis.
LO.4 Apply knowledge of infectious diseases to clinical
scenarios, identifying appropriate diagnostic investigations and
therapeutic approaches.
Making Judgements
LO.5 Evaluate clinical and epidemiological information to
support the initial assessment and management of patients
with infectious diseases.

Metodi didattici
Teaching is delivered through face-to-face lectures, seminars, clinical
case presentations, student presentations, revision sessions and,
where appropriate, bedside teaching in infectious disease wards.
Lectures provide the theoretical foundations required to understand the
epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, diagnosis and
treatment of major infectious diseases (LO.1–LO.2).
Seminars and case-based discussions allow students to apply
knowledge of infectious diseases to clinical scenarios, integrating
clinical findings, laboratory investigations and epidemiological
information to support diagnostic and therapeutic reasoning
(LO.3–LO.5).
Bedside teaching, where available, provides opportunities to observe
the clinical application of infectious disease principles and to discuss
real patient cases under supervision, supporting the development of clinical reasoning and the integration of diagnostic and management
approaches (LO.3–LO.5).

Contenuti
The Infectious Diseases A module introduces students to the clinical
and epidemiological aspects of major infectious diseases, with
emphasis on their pathogenesis, clinical presentation, diagnosis,
treatment and prevention.
The programme includes the following topics:
Viral Infections
Viral hepatitis: HAV, HBV, HCV, HDV and HEV.
Emerging and re-emerging viral infections, including Ebola,
Zika, Dengue and Chikungunya.
COVID-19 and other respiratory viral infections.
HIV infection: epidemiology, definitions, pathogenesis, clinical
manifestations, opportunistic infections, diagnosis and
treatment.
Systemic and Severe Infections
The febrile patient: temperature regulation, definition and
causes of fever of unknown origin (FUO), laboratory
investigations and treatment approaches.
SIRS and sepsis: prevalence, definitions, pathogenesis,
clinical manifestations, diagnosis and treatment.
Endocarditis.
Bone and soft tissue infections.
Other Important Infectious Diseases
Sexually transmitted diseases.
Infections of the central nervous system, including acute and
chronic meningitis and encephalitis.
Tuberculosis from the infectious disease specialist
perspective, including epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment,
with attention to MDR, XDR and TDR mycobacteria.
Malaria and selected tropical infectious diseases.
Invasive fungal infections, including candidiasis and
aspergillosis.
Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases
General principles of vaccination and types of vaccines.
Integration of diagnostic, therapeutic and preventive
approaches in the clinical management of infectious diseases.
