Obiettivi Formativi
On successful completion of the module, students will be able to
demonstrate:
Knowledge and Understanding
LO1. Describe the principles of infectious disease control and
eradication, including transmission pathways, epidemiological
determinants and the role of public health interventions.
LO2. Explain the principles of prevention strategies, including
vaccination programmes, surveillance, diagnosis and treatment
approaches aimed at reducing infectious disease transmission.
LO3. Describe the life cycles, epidemiology and main diagnostic
approaches for selected parasitic diseases of global health
importance.
Applying Knowledge and Understanding
LO4. Apply knowledge of infectious disease epidemiology to identify
opportunities for disease prevention, control and eradication.
LO5. Interpret clinical and epidemiological information to support the
management and control of infectious diseases in individual patients
and populations.
Making Judgements
LO6. Evaluate the challenges and limitations associated with
infectious disease control and eradication strategies, including
diagnostic, therapeutic, epidemiological and socio-economic factors.

Metodi didattici
Teaching is delivered through face-to-face lectures, seminars, case
presentations and, where appropriate, supervised bedside teaching in
infectious disease wards. Lectures provide the theoretical foundations of
infectious disease control and eradication, including transmission
mechanisms, prevention strategies, vaccination and epidemiological
approaches (LO.1–LO.3).
Seminars and case-based discussions allow students to apply knowledge of
infectious diseases to clinical and public health scenarios, integrating
diagnostic, therapeutic and preventive approaches (LO.4–LO.5). Discussion of parasitic life cycles and diagnostic strategies supports understanding of
intervention points for disease control programmes (LO.3).
Where bedside teaching is available, students observe the clinical application
of infectious disease principles and discuss cases with clinicians, supporting
the integration of clinical and epidemiological reasoning (LO.5–LO.6).

Contenuti
The Science of Disease Control and Eradication module introduces students
to the clinical and epidemiological principles underlying the prevention,
control and elimination of infectious diseases. The programme integrates
concepts of transmission, diagnosis, treatment and prevention, with particular
emphasis on strategies used in infectious disease control programmes.
The course covers the following topics:
Principles of Disease Control and Eradication
Concepts of infectious disease control, elimination and eradication.
Transmission dynamics, epidemiological determinants and the role of
surveillance in infectious disease control.
The contribution of diagnosis, treatment and preventive strategies to
reducing disease transmission.
Challenges associated with emerging and re-emerging infectious
diseases.
Vaccination and Prevention Strategies
General principles of vaccination and mechanisms of vaccine-
induced protection.
Types of vaccines and their role in infectious disease prevention and
eradication programmes.
Parasitic Diseases of Global Health Importance
Life cycles, epidemiology and diagnostic approaches of selected
parasitic diseases affecting humans.
Identification of diagnostic and intervention points for disease control.
Clinical and epidemiological aspects of selected parasitic diseases,
including African and American trypanosomiasis, strongyloidiasis,
fascioliasis, malaria and other relevant tropical infections.
Application of Disease Control Principles
Integration of clinical, epidemiological and public health approaches
in the management of infectious diseases.
Case-based discussion of infectious diseases and strategies for their
control and prevention.
