Obiettivi Formativi

Knowledge and Understanding
1. Describe the scientific, healthcare-related, economic, and regulatory factors involved in drug discovery and development.
2. Describe the main strategies currently used for drug discovery, including target identification, lead compound selection, and optimisation.
3. Describe the requirements, methodologies, and procedures involved in preclinical drug development, including pharmacological and toxicological evaluation.
4. Describe the principles, methodology, and regulatory requirements of the different phases of clinical drug development.
Applying Knowledge and Understanding
5. Critically evaluate and describe appropriate study designs for the evaluation of drug efficacy and safety, including the interpretation of clinical trial methodology and results.
Communication Skills
6. Communicate concepts related to drug discovery and development using appropriate scientific terminology and a clear, logically structured approach.

Metodi didattici

Teaching methods include formal lectures, discussion of clinical and scientific examples, guided analysis of clinical studies, and independent study.
Lectures provide the fundamental knowledge required to understand the scientific, healthcare-related, economic, regulatory, and ethical principles involved in drug discovery and development, including strategies for drug discovery, preclinical evaluation, and clinical development (supports LO1–LO4). Discussion and critical analysis of clinical studies support the interpretation of clinical trial methodology, evaluation of study design, and critical assessment of clinical evidence, including limitations and potential sources of bias (supports LO5).
Guided independent study and recommended learning resources support consolidation of knowledge and the development of the ability to communicate concepts related to drug discovery and development using appropriate scientific terminology and logical organisation (supports LO1–LO6).

Contenuti

The module covers the scientific, healthcare-related, economic, regulatory, and ethical aspects of drug discovery and development. Topics include strategies for drug discovery and selection of candidate compounds, preclinical evaluation (including pharmacological and toxicological studies), regulatory requirements, and the four phases of clinical drug development. Particular emphasis is placed on clinical trial methodology, including study design, interpretation of results, limitations of clinical evidence, drug repurposing, and issues related to scientific integrity and publication bias.
