This course introduces students to the core concepts and methods of demography and examines how population dynamics interact with key sustainability challenges. Emphasis is placed on understanding demographic data, indicators, and methods, and on interpreting population trends in a sustainability and policy perspective. The course combines theoretical foundations, empirical evidence, and applied exercises using real demographic data. By the end of the course, students will be able to: • Understand the basic concepts and theories of population dynamics. • Know and apply basic demographic tools such as rates, life tables, and fertility measures. • Explain the links between population dynamics and sustainability challenges. • Critically discuss demographic policies related to reproduction, ageing, and welfare systems. • Work with real demographic data and communicate results clearly, both in written and oral form.
Prerequisiti
There are no formal prerequisites.
Metodi didattici
In addition to traditional lectures, students will work on various problem sets, some completed collectively during class, and others in groups outside of class, to be presented during the final lectures. The content of the group work will be defined at the beginning of the course and made available on the course’s KIRO page.
