Learning Objectives and Learning results. At the successful conclusion of this module, you should be able to demonstrate the following Module Level Learning Outcomes (MLOs): • MLO.1 Knowledge & Understanding: Explain key epidemiological measures and distinguish major observational study designs. • MLO.2 Application of Knowledge: Calculate and interpret epidemiological measures. • MLO.3 Autonomy of Judgement: Select and justify appropriate methods for medical scenarios and critically evaluate studies. • MLO.4 Communication Skills: Interpret and present data using correct graphs, tables, and terminology (MCQs). • MLO.5 Learning Skills: Navigate the curriculum integrating lectures, readings, software training, and independent study; Demonstrate scientific reasoning and critical reading to connect history, statistics, and epidemiology for understanding disease patterns and evaluating study/analysis methods.

Metodi didattici
Teaching methods. Lectures, which present key concepts or practices (supports CLO.1, CLO.2) and are supported by discussion (supports CLO.2-3), guided readings, PC-based sessions, project-based learning and the e-learning platform (supports CLO.5) The module will include guidance to help you prepare for the exam (supports CLO.4, 5) and throughout the course you will be presented with references to further readings and other materials which emphasise the integrated nature of the study of disease (supports CLO.5).

Contenuti
Contents. Epidemiology is a discipline which helps us to understand patterns of disease in human populations and to identify appropriate mechanisms and analytical methods to calculating key epidemiological measures. The purpose of this module, as a component of the “SCIENTIFIC METHODS IN MEDICINE” Integrated Course, is to support you to develop the ability to describe the range of observational epidemiological studies used to examine the health status of a population, to describe and calculate epidemiological measures used to define and quantify health problems and to read and critically evaluate example epidemiological studies in the fields of medicine and public health literature. Themes addressed include: Basic principles of epidemiology, observational epidemiologic study designs; Measures of disease frequency and association; Methods of reading, interpretating and evaluating health information from published epidemiologic studies.
