Obiettivi Formativi

Immunity The aim of the Immunity module is to introduce students to the complexity of the immune response with examples from recent literature on the power of molecular medicine and how humanity can make use of it for biotechnological applications. At the end of the module students, should have received the stimuli to use their intellect and be inspired by the creativity and proficiency of modern scientists and science. General Pathology The aim of the General Pathology module is to give the students a unifying framework for concepts related to cell injury, inflammation, regeneration, repair and degenerative diseases with emphasis on the role the immune system plays in these conditions. Cancer Biology The aim of the module is to introduce students to cancer disease focusing on causes, mechanisms, and molecular targets. The module will allow the student to obtain a comprehensive knowledge about: tumor classification (grading, staging, molecular analysis); principles of cancer epidemiology; biological and molecular mechanisms of physical, chemical and biological carcinogenesis; interactions of tumor cells with the microenvironment and the immune system; tumor progression, evolution and metastatic spread. At the end of the course students will be able to analyze the vast complexity of cancer disease field in a critical light with the awareness of the hallmarks of cancer.

Prerequisiti

Appraisal of the topics covered in the Immunity module requires a basic knowledge in immunology and a general acquaintance on how the immune system is organized and works; this is expected or should be acquired from autonomous study. The intellectual drive necessary to be exposed to and appreciate biotechnological applications in the realm of immunity is expected from the students of this Master. Understanding the topics covered in the Cancer module requires a knowledge of the animal eukaryotic cell biology, the main biochemical processes and macromolecules involved, the main human anatomical districts and physiological functions.

Metodi didattici

Lectures, laboratory tutorial, self-assessment test, multimedia tools, discussion of recent publications related to lecture topics.

Verifica Apprendimento

The learning test will take place in written form and will be included in the Degenerative and Cancer exam.
