Syllabus

Obiettivi Formativi

This course introduces the foundations of Health Psychology and explores the psychological dimensions of health, illness, patient-provider communication, and end-of-life care. By the end of the course, students will be able to: Understand psychological determinants of health and illness Analyze the subjective experience of illness and psychological adaptation to disease Recognize the role of communication and empathy in clinical care Apply qualitative tools to explore and give voice to the patient perspective Reflect on the role of psychology in chronic care, health promotion, and end-of-life contexts

Prerequisiti

No formal prerequisites are required. The course is open to all students and provides a comprehensive introduction to Health Psychology, with a focus on patient-centered approaches, lived illness experiences, and healthcare communication.

Interactive lectures and discussions Case studies and narrative materials Group work and structured reflections Use of multimedia content (video, patient stories, comics) Optional group activity: creation of a poster on a course-related topic

Verifica Apprendimento

Written test with 31 multiple-choice questions – Covers both theoretical and applied course content – No oral exam Students who attend at least 80% of the sessions may optionally take part in a group project to create a thematic poster based on the course contents. At the discretion of the instructor, this activity may result in up to 1 bonus point added to the final exam grade.

Contenuti

The course is divided into four main modules, combining theoretical input, case discussions, applied workshops, and narrative exploration. Module 1 – Foundations of Health Psychology Introduction to Health Psychology and its origins The biopsychosocial model and person-centered healthcare Risk behaviors, prevention, and health promotion Psychological factors in disease development and management Mind-body interaction and mental health Health inequalities and psychosocial determinants Module 2 – Psychological Experiences of Illness and Chronicity The lived experience of illness Psychological impact of diagnosis and illness trajectories Coping strategies and psychological adjustment Quality of life and redefinition of identity The care relationship as an emotional and relational resource Module 3 – Communication, End-of-Life, and Death Studies Empathy and active listening in patient-provider communication Shared decision-making and narrative-based approaches Death education and training for end-of-life care Bereavement, loss, and the meaning of death in contemporary society Communicating in palliative and terminal care contexts Storytelling, graphic medicine, and alternative communication tools Module 4 – Methods for Exploring the Illness Experience Introduction to illness experience and qualitative approaches in health psychology Autobiographical narratives, reflective writing, and phenomenological interviews Graphic medicine, body mapping, and other visual tools Thematic analysis and participatory methods (e.g., photovoice, patient journey, narrative interview) Strategies for giving voice and meaning to the patient's perspective in research and practice
