Syllabus

Obiettivi Formativi

The course explores the history of Western, Central and Southern Africa from approximately 1000 AD to the present. Special attention is paid to society, politics, and institutions in pre-colonial, colonial, and independent Africa. The goal is to provide a solid historical foundation for understanding contemporary Africa.

Prerequisiti

A good knowledge of the English language is required. The lectures and most of the readings are in English. The oral exam can be taken in Italian or in English

The course is divided in three modules. Module 1 and 2 address two themes in the history of Western and Central Africa: the connections with the world (Module 1) and colonialism (Module 2). Module 3 deals more intensively with southern African history.
