At the successful conclusion of this module, you should be able to demonstrate the following module level learning outcomes:
LO.1 Knowledge & Understanding You will acquire knowledge of: • Fundamental principles of general, organic, and propaedeutic biochemistry relevant to medical studies, including molecular structure, bonding, and reactivity. LO.2 Application of Knowledge You will be able to: • Apply basic chemical principles to biological and medical problems and perform elementary calculations involving stoichiometry, pH, and chemical equilibria. LO.3 Autonomy of Judgement You will be able to: • Select appropriate chemical concepts to analyse basic problems and assess the consistency and correctness of simple calculations. LO.5 Learning Skills You will be able to: • Demonstrate responsibility for independent study by integrating lectures, readings, and teaching materials to consolidate the chemical foundations of medical studies.

Metodi didattici
Teaching methods include lectures, discussion and guided independent study. Lectures present key concepts (supports LO.1, LO.2), facilitate interactive discussion and collaborative learning (supports LO.3, 5) and are supported by the e-learning platform (supports LO.5). Teaching will include guidance to help you prepare for the exam and throughout you will be presented with references to further readings and other materials to support your development (supports LO.5).

Contenuti
This module will provide you with an understanding of the fundamental concepts of general chemistry (2CFU - Prof. Simona Viglio), organic chemistry (2CFU Prof Livia Visai), and propaedeutic biochemistry (1 CFU - Prof. Nora Bloise) required for medical and health sciences. The module introduces the structure of matter and chemical transformations, with particular reference to molecules of biological interest and processes occurring in living systems. The general chemistry section covers atomic and molecular structure, the periodic table, chemical bonding, states of matter, solutions, and basic thermodynamics. It also addresses chemical equilibrium, kinetics, acid–base and redox reactions, with relevance to physiological systems. The organic chemistry section introduces stereochemistry, functional groups, nomenclature, and the structure and reactions of major classes of organic compounds, emphasizing biological relevance. The propaedeutic biochemistry section examines the structure and properties of key biological macromolecules—carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleotides—providing a foundation for further study.
