The course aims to provide students with the basic notions of pragmatics and to illustrate selected phenomena. By the end of the course, students will have acquired the tools necessary to analyse linguistic behaviour and communication across different contexts of use.

The course will provide an introduction to pragmatics. After a brief historical overview of the emergence and development of pragmatics from the philosophy of language, a number of basic notions will be illustrated, including:
deixis and deictic types; Grice’s logic of conversation: the cooperative principle, conversational maxims, and implicatures (conventional vs. conversational implicatures); the information structure of utterances and the notions of topic, comment, and focus.
