At the end of the course the student is expected to know the principles of bioethics and be able to apply the bioethical approach methodology to complex clinical cases and new technologies. A part of the course is dedicated to communication with patients, family members and colleagues.
Course Prerequisites
The topics covered in the Bioethics course require the student to have basic clinical experience in the medical and surgical fields, resulting from internships in the General Hospital.
Teaching Methods
Lectures and guided discussion of real life clinical cases and topics of bioethical interest. The course uses Power Point presentations, made available on the Kiro platform. The section of the course dedicated to communication uses the role playing technique.
Assessment Methods
Written exam, 1 hour and 15 minutes duration, including one open question related to the topics covered in class. The grade, expressed in 0-30, is published on the esse3 platform and subsequently transmitted for the final verbalization of the integrated course (for further details please see also the Syllabus sheet of the Integrated Course in Public Medicine).

Contents
The program includes: definition of bioethics; the description of the 4 principles introduced by J. Childress and T. Beauchamp (1979), with particular attention to the issue of autonomy in complex clinical situations; bioethics in transplant medicine; euthanasia, medical decisions at the end of life. A part of the course is dedicated to communication with the patient, family members and the team, with particular attention to the communication of cancer diagnosis.
