The course aims to show students the approach to patients with reduced renal function, the tests and procedures that allow us to differentiate cases of acute renal failure from cases of chronic renal failure, the treatment of the most common complications of acute and chronic kidney injury such as disorders of the volume, of potassium and sodium. Finally, students will learn to recognize typical glomerular alterations and diagnose the most common glomerulopathies.
Course Prerequisites
The student should have knowledge of renal physiology and medical semiotics
Teaching Methods
Discussion of clinical cases with interaction with students, images of renal biopsies with histopathology quizzes.
Assessment Methods
Learning will be verified by questioning students during the discussion of the clinical case. There will be no exam but participation in at least 4 seminars will be required for the award of 1 credit
Texts
Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine
Contents
Starting from simple clinical cases that are discussed with the students, the course aims to provide students with the tools for the differential diagnosis between acute renal failure and chronic renal failure. During each seminar we will discuss pathophysiology, diagnosis and therapy in a very practical way. Students will be invited to actively participate in the seminar. For cases involving glomerular diseases, images of renal biopsies will also be shown and discussed in detail. For each seminar there will be a short section dedicated to the histological quiz where students will be invited to act as pathologist and make the histological diagnosis. Cases of functional, parenchymal or obstructive acute kidney injury and cases of chronic kidney disease due to glomerulopathies, nephroangiosclerosis, diabetes, transplantation will be discussed.
Course Language
