Course Objectives
THE COURSE IS STREACTLY RELATED TO:
- Agenda 2030
- Sviluppo Sostenibile
- goal N°1-8
The course is aimed at students who share an interest in 360-degree "health" issues that affect modern Humanity with an eye to health stories, political, economic and cultural past and with an attention to what can happen or be done in the future.
GLOBAL HEALTH is the "health" of populations in the global context; it has been defined as "the area of study, research and practice that places a priority on improving health and achieving health equity for all people around the world". Problems that transcend national borders or have a global political and economic impact are often highlighted. Therefore, global health concerns improving health worldwide (including mental health), reducing inequalities and protecting against global threats that ignore national borders. Global health should not be confused with international health, which is defined as the branch of public health that focuses on developing nations and on foreign aid from industrialised countries. Global health can be measured in relation to various global diseases and their prevalence in the world and the threat of decreasing life in the present.
The predominant agency associated with global health (and international health) is the World Health Organization (WHO). Other major agencies that have an impact on global health include UNICEF and the World Food Programme. The United Nations system has also played a role with cross-sectoral actions to address global health and its socio-economic determinants at the basis of the declaration of the Millennium Development Goals and the latest Sustainable Development Goals.
What are the biggest challenges facing health systems now? How are these challenges identified and measured? In the event of an epidemic, disaster or armed conflict, how do the experts determine what health measures should be used? Is it possible to eradicate diseases such as the Guinea worm, tuberculosis and HIV? How can we address mental health disorders, tumors and non-communicable diseases and who is best equipped to do so?
Global health is a new field in public health sciences that integrates knowledge from fields such as epidemiology, medicine, economics and behavioral sciences.
The student at the end of the GLOBAL HEALTH Course should be able to know the major problems concerning the "health" of Humanity and what may be the best way of approach.
