Course Objectives

BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF THE PROCEDURES FOR DETERMINING VITAL PARAMETERS AND MAKING THE MOST COMMON PROCEDURES SUCH AS VENOUS SAMPLING, ELECTROCARDIOGRAM, ECOFAST, PATIENT ASSESSMENT, ANAMNESIS. Enable the student to carry out practical activities so that they are able to have a correct methodological approach to the patient to be visited. The workshop of practical activities is a project that was born and lived in the past and is now proposed after the POSTCOVID phase, and is born from collaboration between students (who have requested it) and Professors, and that has the objective of allowing medical students to acquire in the first years greater confidence with tools and maneuvers that are basic and fundamental part of the profession of the doctor. The aim is therefore to give the opportunity to devote, as the name says, to the most practical aspects of medicine having sufficient time available to acquire manual skills and dexterity, time that often turns out to be limited during hospitalized internships. Until it was active every year about 200 students of the Golgi and 70 of the Harvey have applied to attend the workshop. Now it is being reactivated for the particular characteristics of the project. In this workshop there will be no structured lectures but presentation, analysis and discussion of problems. The figures of the tutors will be a simple very important support available to students without holding any kind of course. It follows that the workshop can be attended at will when time is available, with a minimum requirement for continuity and a minimum number of hours quantifiable in 8 for each student. In this workshop, manoeuvres are carried out which are not supported by other activities but are important for training and professional growth. THE ACTIVITIES: - patient approach and search for specific signs and symptoms, palpation anatomy, surface anatomy, palpation techniques, topography recognition - Cardiovascular Semeiotica and individualized basic auscultation with individual and personalized devices and methodology - Venous sampling and injection procedures possible - Bandages and bandage techniques Sampling: Butterfly, test tubes and laces will be provided for venous sampling practice; BLSD: There will be mannequins available for heart massage. The tutors will also give simple support and specific instructions for execution. -Execution of glycemic finger tests, CNOGA TEST finger, measurement of the PA in various modes, execution of the electrocardiogram, - in advanced procedures bladder catheterization, gastric nose tube, physical examination, history Allow the student to carry out practical activities so as to be able to have a correct methodological approach to the patient to be examined. The practical activities workshop is a project that was born and lived in the past and is now proposed again after the POSTCOVID phase, and was born from the collaboration between students (who requested it) and Professors, and which has the objective of allowing medical students to acquire greater confidence in the first years with tools and maneuvers that are a basic and fundamental part of the medical profession. The aim is therefore to give the opportunity to dedicate oneself, as the name itself suggests, to the more practical aspects of medicine, having sufficient time available to acquire manual skills and dexterity, time which is often limited during hospital inmates. As long as it was active every year Golgi and Harvey students requested to attend the workshop. Now we want to reactivate it due to the peculiar characteristics of the project. In this laboratory there will not only be structured lessons but presentation, analysis and discussion of problems and above all practical activities to meet the needs of know-how. The tutors will be a simple, very important support available to students to best develop their skills. In this laboratory, maneuvers are carried out that are not supported by other activities but are important for educational and professional growth. THE ACTIVITIES - patient approach and search for specific signs and symptoms, palpatory anatomy, surface anatomy, palpation techniques, topographic recognition - Cardiovascular semiotics and individualized basic auscultation with devices and individual and personalized methodology - Venous sampling and possible injective procedures - Bandages and bandaging techniques - performing glycemic finger tests, CNOGA TEST fingers, POCTs and finger laboratory tests - BP measurement in various modalities and vital signs, - execution of the electrocardiocardiogram, and telemedicine tests - in advanced procedures possibly bladder catheterization modalities, naso gastric tube,

Course Prerequisites

BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY The workshop is aimed at acquiring practical skills needed for those working in the medical field. Obviously the type of activity will be adapted to the needs of students, since it meets an important need of students in the POSTCOVID phase. 1) Basic activities are: - SAFE visit, venous blood collection: students will practice on their own available companions; - systolic/diastolic pressure measurement;(sphygmomanometer) - suture: simulations of wound sutures can be carried out on very simple models, such as cloth sheeting or foam blocks covered with a thin layer of plastic (holders, surgical forceps, suture thread) - Ophthalmoscopy: students will learn how to observe the fundus by practicing with each other;(ophthalmoscopy) - Otoscopy: for the examination of the external auditory canal and tympanic membrane (otoscope) - Compilation of medical records: students must be able to observe directly the records used in the department and become familiar with the method of compilation;(model of clinical record of the department) - Examination of the reflexes: the students will be able to evaluate on the companions the physiological reflexes before comparing in clinic with those pathological ones;(hammer) - Exploration of the oral cavity and upper pharynx; (tongue depressor) 2)Other activities proposed, which may be added to the basic ones within the laboratory are: – Ultrasound: the basic knowledge required to understand this technique is too complex to be fully learned here. However, the possibility of personally contesting an ultrasound allows a student with adequate theoretical preparation to associate this with practical evidence. It is also considered the possibility of organizing both with students and with available teachers any courses, keeping them in tune with the practical purpose of the laboratory;(echograph) – BLS practice: students are given the opportunity to practise BLS on suitable dummies. Also in this case basic knowledge is required, which is currently provided by the Clinical Methodology course. There is the possibility of further courses on the BLS, using for this purpose both BLS instructor students and volunteers (BLS dummies)

More information

The course is innovative and is related to the new ministerial guidelines for reform SSN, SSR, RSA, PHARMACIES, CRONICITA' issued in February 2021 and included in the themes of the WHO 2030 Agenda, and will be carried out online and onsite with the collaboration of various lecturers from other degree programmes at Pavia University. The expected learning outcomes describe how much a student must know, understand and be able to do at the end of the learning process, In line with the relevant Dublin descriptors. This section should also specify the acquisition of practical skills through laboratory work, computer activities or through the use of specific tools or methodologies. They can be described as follows: "At the end of the course, the student will have to know/be able to..." At the end of the course, the student should be able to complete a full report (problem-oriented medical record or similar) containing the complete data concerning the patient’s clinical history and to perform a general clinical examination of the patient, Identifying the alterations relevant for clinical diagnosis or the further diagnostic-therapeutic procedure to be undertaken.
