Course Objectives
Educational Objectives The primary goal of the course is to provide theoretical and applied knowledge in the field of relational and socio-emotional development, with particular focus on the preschool years and on individual–environment interactions. A secondary goal is to allow students to gain practical experience with the methods and application contexts of the learned contents. Expected Learning Outcomes (based on Dublin Descriptors) By the end of the course, students will be able to: Knowledge: describe the key features of emotional and relational development, with a specific focus on attachment relationships. Applying knowledge: identify the factors and mechanisms that influence socio-emotional development within families and primary emotional bonds (including temperament and individual differences). Judgment skills: critically analyze the most common emotional-relational challenges in family and educational settings. Communication skills: use appropriate psychological terminology to describe constructs related to socio-emotional development. Learning skills: independently integrate the theoretical and applied materials provided during the course.
Course Prerequisites
There are no specific prerequisites. However, basic knowledge in psychology and pedagogy may facilitate the understanding of the course content
Teaching Methods
The course addresses the main trajectories of emotional and relational development Main modules: Foundations of socio-emotional development: theoretical models and developmental stages Attachment and emotional regulation: implications for the parent–child relationship and tools for assessment in infancy and early childhood Temperament and individual differences: observational tools for temperament traits and implications for development Emotional competence: developmental phases and domains, including aspects related to socialization Parenting support: introduction to intervention programs in childhood and adolescence, with reference to ethical and deontological aspects Application contexts: examples of different family types and settings for practical implementation There is no distinction between attending and non-attending students. However, active participation is strongly encouraged. The course is delivered in person and structured as follows: Lecture-based teaching (DE): 4 hours per CFU using slides, scientific papers, and videos (total: 24 hours) Interactive teaching (DI): 2 hours per CFU involving guided exercises, small group discussions, peer role-playing, and critical reflections (total: 12 hours) Self-study: 19 hours per CFU for individual study of the course bibliography, slides, and supplementary materials (total: 114 hours) To promote inclusive teaching, the instructor is available for weekly office hours (up to 2 hours), to be scheduled by appointment via email. Special focus will be placed on the observation and assessment of socio-emotional development, through videos, questionnaires, interviews, and observational tools.
Assessment Methods
Written exam consisting of 3 open-ended questions related to the required readings and the course materials available on the KIRO platform. Duration: 60 minutes. Evaluation criteria: Completeness and accuracy of content Relevance and consistency with the questions asked Use of appropriate psychological terminology Clarity, synthesis, and organization of the response Critical thinking and ability to elaborate independently on the topics
