The course is an introduction to the short story in English from the Nineteenth century to the present through the analysis of selected texts and their relationship with the historical and cultural context in which they were written. At the end of the course students are expected to be able to analyse the primary texts and to set them in context.
Course Prerequisites
Language level: B1 as recognised by the Common European Framework of Reference.
Teaching Methods
Lectures in English. Introduction to periods and authors will be followed by translation and analysis of selected texts.
Assessment Methods
Oral exam in English. During the exam, students will be asked to: - Discuss cultural and literary trends - Read, translate and analyse primary texts

Contents
The course will investigate the evolution of the English and Irish short story, from the Nineteenth century to the present. Stories by key authors, including Dickens, Kipling, Mansfield and Bowen, will be analysed in class.
