Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to provide the basics of control theory. It is mainly splitted in two main parts: analysis and synthesis. In particular, the former focuses on the definition of the fundamental properties of dynamical systems along with the main methods to describe and model them. The latter presents the main methods to design basic control schemes addressing simple given requirements both in time and frequency domain.

Course Prerequisites

Linear algebra, complex numbers, basics of circuit theory and physics

Teaching Methods

The classes include theoretical lessons and exercise.

Several exam style questions will be proposed during the lesson.

Assessment Methods

Closed-book, closed-note 2 hours written exam. The exam will test either theoretical knowledge and skills in solving simple exercises.

System Analysis
Introduction to control problems. Mathematical modeling of physical systems. Definition of dynamical systems. State-space models. Trajectories and equilibria. Stability: Stability of linear time-invariant systems. Transfer functions. Step response. Frequency response. Bode diagrams. Simulation of LTI system using matlab.

Design of control systems
Introduction to control problems. Feedback control schemes. Block algebra. Control specifications. Bode stability criteria. Static, dynamic and robust performance. Sensitivity functions. Proportional controller and Root locus. Control design in the frequency domain.
