Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course introduces students to the general causes of disability in the oncology field and suggests the tools available to the physiotherapist to deal with the resulting rehabilitation problems.

Course Prerequisites

General knowledge of basic disciplines (anatomy and general pathophysiology), general knowledge of bibliographic research methods, database query methods

Teaching Methods

Frontal lessons with audio visual tools, clinical case discussions

Assessment Methods

1st part: bibliographic research on any topic among those exposed during the lessons. Topic needs to to be agreed with the teacher. Subsequently a document is elaborated and handed in at the time of the examination. The document consists in at least two pages, which a structure as follows: title of the topic, description of the sources used, description of the contents, personal comment on the content in relation to one's experience/profession. (Basic rules for editing: >> font: Times New Roman font 12, 1.5 line spacing, justified margins)
2nd part: student is request to: shortly discuss on the research (part 1) + answer about a question chosen by the teacher
Examination Scoring: 70% spoken interview (min 12 – max 20), 30% written composition (min 6 – max 10)

Contents

Starting from current epidemiological data, students are given general information on tumours behaviour. The program is organized into 4 lessons of two hours each. The following themes are exposed:
1.- tumour epidemiology: how tumours behaviour profiles are changing in recent decades, long survivorship and impact on rehabilitation,
2.- the model: a.- tumour, b.- treatments, c.- patients context, d.- patients comorbidities. Operational criteria, goals and tools in oncological rehabilitation
3.- side effects of oncological therapies (radio, chemo, hormonal treatments, surgery, targeted therapies): impact on the patient's functioning
4.- physical activity and exercise: therapeutic exercise and physical exercise: what is what; criteria for the cancer patient
5.- pain in cancer patients: use of rehabilitation tools to preserve the patient's functioning
