Course Objectives

The course aims at furnishing a basic knowledge of Engineering Geology, referring in particular to the themes which have typical and widespread applications in Civil and Environmental Engineering. For this reason, the topic is analyzed not only by a geological approach, but also by the point of view of a technician that have to solve problems dealing with the themes of Earth Sciences. Since the course planning mainly practical, practice exercises are carried out, aiming at giving the required tools for the analysis of the main features of terrains and rocks, the analysis and the realization of thematic maps, the solution of maps problems, the application of most recent techniques in the branch of environmental problems.

Contents

1. Fundamentals of General Geology and Lithology Physical state, composition, structure, and movements of the Earth's crust. Volcanic and seismic hazards. Chemical-mineralogical composition and physico-chemical properties of the main rock-forming minerals. Rock classification. Rocks as construction materials: properties, uses, and extraction areas. Rock degradation processes. Weathering and soil formation (pedogenesis). Criteria for geochronological correlation. 2. Elements of Structural Geology Brittle deformations (joints, faults, and cleavage), ductile deformations (folds and flexures), and mixed deformations (thrusts and nappes) of rocks. Neotectonics. Natural and induced subsidence due to fluid extraction. 3. Elements of Geomorphology Geomorphological processes caused by the action of surface water, glaciers, the sea, and wind. Hydrogeological hazards. Slope stability analysis. Classification and causes of landslides. 4. Elements of Stratigraphy Identification of main stratification geometries and their relationship with contour lines on maps. The “Rule of V’s.” Map representation (construction of topographic profiles and geological cross-sections). 5. Surveys, Elements of Geotechnics, and Remote Sensing Percussion and rotary drilling. Continuous coring. Geoelectric and seismic surveys and their application limits. Stratigraphy drafting and creation of 2D and 3D stratigraphic profiles. Grain size distribution curves, geotechnical laboratory tests (direct shear test, oedometer test). Satellite, drone-based, and GNSS remote sensing. Introduction to GIS environments. 6. Elements of Hydrogeology The basic water cycle. Porosity and permeability of unconsolidated rocks. Darcy’s law. Groundwater dynamics. Aquifers. Relationships between surface and groundwater. Permeability of consolidated rocks. Karst phenomena. Springs and their various classifications. 7. Geology of Engineering Works geological surveys and planning phases for the realization of transport routes (roads in plain areas, roads in hilly areas, roads in mountain areas; defence works of roads); tunnels (tunnels and wall tunnels); dams (stiff, deformable, under-river). Practical Exercises Macroscopic rock identification. Cartographic exercises. Reading and interpretation of geological maps. Hydrogeology and stratigraphy exercises.
