Syllabus

Course Objectives

At the end of the course, the student will know the basic principles, characteristics, requirements, constraints and management possibilities of integrated production systems, i.e. systems with a high degree of automation and interconnection.
The modelling learned and the simulations conducted will enable the student to be able to use the methods for the design and management of integrated production systems with application examples to FMS.

Course Prerequisites

It may be useful for the student to have a basic knowledge of processing and statistical data analysis.

Teaching Methods

Lectures through which the student learns the main theoretical aspects and models.
Numerical exercises aimed at applying the models studied.
Exercises using software for the simulation of systems.

Assessment Methods

The examination consists of a written test lasting approximately one hours or one and a half hours and an oral test that is mandatory only for those who score <= 20 and >=28 in the written test. The competences required and tested are - theoretical knowledge of FMSs (architectures/topologies, components, strategies adopted and analytical tools to assess their performance) - knowledge of key performance parameters - knowledge of analytical tools applied to FMSs with simple problem solving (e.g. use of MVA) - knowledge of the simulation logic of the tools used - knowledge of production planning and control principles (also with reference to simple examples covered in the course). Please note that students will be asked to participate in the development of a project in order to assess their learning of simulation concepts. Students will work in small groups on the simulation of an application case, which they will develop and present to teachers and colleagues in a dedicated session at the end of the course using a PowerPoint presentation. The project will be assessed with a score ranging from 0 to 3, which will contribute to the final mark achieved in the written exam.

2. Description of the main system architectures and topologies (Lines, Job Shops, Cells and FMS).
3. Automation, technologies and resources used with focus on CNC, robotics, machines and machining centres, tools and equipment.
4. Performance evaluation of an integrated production system through analytical methods (focus on models such as Mean Value Analysis) and simulations (use of Arena software with student licence)
5. Design and definition of decision problems in integrated production systems (assembly balancing)
6. Management planning and control
