Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to complete the basic training of the student in analog and mixed signal electronics making use of an intensive laboratory measurement activity and of circuit simulation. At the end of the course the student should have acquired knowledge on architectures of simple electronics systems, ranging from multistage linear and non linear circuits, signal conditioning stages, waveform generators. He/she will know the systems for the signal conversion from analog to digital and vice versa and the theory of noise in circuits.

Course Prerequisites

Knowledge of circuit theory and applied electronics (analog) with particular reference to the MOS and BJT transistors, operational amplifiers, Bode plots. Familiarity with the use of the Fourier transform, the Laplace transform, and the complex numbers. Contents of the Modulus A of this course.

Teaching Methods

Lectures (hours/year in lecture theatre): 22 Practical class (hours/year in lecture theatre): 15 Practicals / Workshops (hours/year in lecture theatre): 43 The lecture are done sing the black board and sometime integrate with foils. The practical classes are done using the black board and they involves reviewing topics to be known solving examples of analytical calculations. and verifying the knowledge acquired by the students. The workshops are done with the use of the circuit simulator and the measuring lab equipment.

Assessment Methods

The exam consists of an oral test that focuses on the topics of both modules. In general, the oral aims to deepen the level of understanding of the course topics and the ability to solve circuit problems.
At the end of each module there will also be an optional ongoing written test on the topics of the module just completed. Each ongoing written test includes 2 or 3 circuit problems and approximately 10 multiple choice questions.
If the ongoing tests are passed for both modules, the final grade is made up of the average of the grades obtained and the oral exam is no longer required.
If the student does not take the ongoing tests or does not pass both, an oral test is required. The oral test varies according to the results obtained in the ongoing tests, placing greater emphasis on the topics not covered by the ongoing tests carried out or where the ongoing tests have highlighted greater gaps.
The final grade will be increased by a score varying between zero and one point based on the evaluation of the reports on the laboratory activities.
