Syllabus

Course Objectives

The objective of the course is to analyze the processes of economic growth and development in emerging countries. The course provides an introduction to the theory of economic growth as a starting point for understanding the main factors determining the development of certain emerging countries. Particular attention is paid to the inclusion of emerging countries in international trade and foreign investment flows. Case studies such as South Korea, China, and India are analyzed. By the end of the course, the student will be able to: 1. Describe the characteristics of an emerging country; 2. Identify the determinants of an emerging country's growth; 3. Identify the obstacles to an emerging country's growth; 4. Understand the role of trade openness in an emerging country's growth; 5. Understand the role of global value chains in emerging countries; 6. Understand the role of multinational corporations in emerging countries; 7. Develop economic policy proposals to support an emerging country's growth.

Course Prerequisites

None but it is recommended to have passed the Economics exam.

Teaching Methods

The course is based on lectures, supplemented by seminars. Activities involving the students will also be offered.

Assessment Methods

The exam is written and divided into two parts: the first consists of multiple-choice questions, and the second consists of open-ended questions. Attending students who participate in the activities offered during the course will take a reduced exam.

1) Development and growth in the history of economic thought (Harrod Domar; Lewis, Solow); 2) Development indicators; 3) The Sustainable Development Goals; 4) The catch up of emerging countries; 5) Globalization and development: trade, foreign direct investments and global value chains.
