At the end of the course, the student will be aware of the historical development of musical philology and its interdisciplinary interactions. The student will also understand the basics of textual dynamics and of the methods to visualize them. He/she will be able to critically evaluate different music editions and consciously make use of a critical edition of a musical text.
Course Prerequisites
General knowledge of western music history.
Teaching Methods
Lectures with exercises of critical evaluation of different types of musical editions.
Assessment Methods
Oral exam on the topics illustrated during the course. Every student (attending classes or not) must also prepare a brief written evaluation of a critical musical edition previously arranged with the teacher; the paper must be handed to the teacher two weeks before the exam.

The tradition of musical texts. Types of sources and musical editions. The critical edition process and its formalization. Basics of stemmatics and genetic criticism.
