Syllabus

Course Objectives

Students will be able to know the characteristics of the materials of the historical artifacts archaeological, architectural, archival and book, musical. Moreover, students will know the main micro- and macro-environmental factors and agents of degradation. Furthermore, students will be able to contribute to the resolution of cultural heritage conservation issues.

Course Prerequisites

Knowledge of general, inorganic and organic chemistry

Teaching Methods

Frontal lectures with the support of Power-Point slides.
Using the blackboard.

Assessment Methods

Oral examination.
Oral interview on the program carried out during the course; the achievement of the teaching objectives will be evaluated. In particular we will consider the degree of acquisition of the contents, the critical abilities matured by the student, the possession of specific language, as well as an organic vision of the topics addressed.
The appropriate language, the technical-scientific knowledge and the ability to reason about the preservation methods of historical artefacts will be positively evaluated.

Introduction on cultural heritage chemistry.
- The materials: characteristics and properties
- Introduction to the chemistry of stone, paper, wood, metal and painting materials. Cases of study.
- Study of environmental and microclimatic conditions.
- Introduction to micro and macro-environmental factors.
- Mechanisms of degradation of inorganic and organic materials. Examples and case studies.
- Diagnostics for the characterization of materials and degradation phases.
Criteria for choosing the analytical method.
