Overview

Date/time interval

Secondo Semestre (02/03/2026 - 12/06/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course provides the tools for understanding cartography as a cultural asset. Starting with ancient examples, it will lead through the examination of medieval and modern products to the analysis of the production of the Istituto Geografico Militare. Attention will also be paid to aerial photography.
At the end of the course the student, through the application of methodological tools, will be able to analyse, interpret and describe through cartography a territorial or urban context, recognising the components and relationships that have historically characterised it.

Course Prerequisites

Attending and non-attending students are required to have a basic knowledge of the methods and concepts of geography learned during the upper secondary school education process.

Teaching Methods

The lectures will address the individual points of the syllabus through PowerPoint presentations, videos and classroom discussions. Individual work on one of the topics investigated in the lecture, agreed upon with the lecturer, will be offered if necessary.

Assessment Methods

Oral interview during which the student must demonstrate that he/she has acquired the methodologies and techniques of analysis illustrated during the course. The student's knowledge and ability to rework the topics presented in class and the reference bibliography will also be tested. In the event that the student has carried out an in-depth study of one of the course topics, this will be presented in the classroom and assessed for the purposes of the examination. The assessment procedure is appropriate to the expected learning outcomes.
At the beginning of the course, students will be provided with all the indications regarding the method of assessment, the criterion adopted and the parameters used in the evaluation.
