The teaching aims to provide students with the basic knowledge in original language of some texts, which are particularly important in Latin literary tradition. Particular attention will be paid to their position inside the generic system of Latin literature and to their contribution to the development of literary culture in Rome. Due importance will be accorded to general problems of Latin culture, to its sources and to its reception in modern literatures and cultures. Students will be requested to: - use methods of the textual and literary analysis - read, understand and translated prose and poetic latin texts (middle-high level) - interpret a text considering its cultural background - individuate elements of classical reception in modern texts and cultures.
Course Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of the lexicon, of the morphological forms and syntactic structures of Latin languageobtained upon completion of a secondary school course in which Latin is taught, or after taking the propaedeutic course in "Elementi di lingua latina".
Teaching Methods
- Frontal and interactive lectures (30 hours) with the support of powerpoint presentations; digital tools for the study of Latin literature; smartboards for interaction. During the lectures, the teacher will explain the main problems related to the texts and initiate students in reading and analysis. The texts will be read in the original language, metrical, and translated and analyzed in detail. Especially for the language decoding stage, student interaction will be encouraged. - Exercises (12 hours): personal work by students, translation and interpretation (with the support of the smartboard); monographic seminars (project work) by students.
Assessment Methods
oral examination. The examination consists of 2 parts: - reading, translating and analysing (grammar and context) Seneca's texts. - Literature. Students will be asked about the most important authors and literary trends. They should be able to situate them in the development of Latin literature with the aid of the handbook. The prokect work will contribute to the final evaluation (20%).

Contents
The subject of the course is Seneca: De brevitate vitae; Epist. 108; Troades vv. 409-813. The texts will be read, translated and interpreted during the lessons. Students should also know the outlines of the history of Latin literature, see bibliography. The main critical issues regarding the Roman literature will be presented during the first lessons, texts and slides will be uploaded on Kiro.
