Syllabus

Course Objectives

The learning outcomes of this course will be:
-) knowledge of the main development points of Roman Art, from the Late Republic to the age of Constantine the Great.
-) Ability to analyze the main Roman works of art from various points of view (stylistic, iconographical, social-historical). Particular emphasis will be placed on the development of communication skills, with the acquisition of a technical-specialist vocabulary.

Course Prerequisites

Students must be familiar with Classical mythology and basic elements of Roman History

Teaching Methods

Lectures (30 Hours) + Seminars (12 Hours). Lectures with abundant use of slides (through the projection of various powerpoints, which will be provided to the students), with the aim of gradually developing knowledge of Roman works of art. Seminars will involve students presenting small papers on specific works of art or themes. The aim is to encourage, through direct involvement in the analysis of each work, the active participation of students and to develop their capacity for observation and criticism. Students who are recipients of the special inclusive teaching methods are asked to agree with the teacher on a personal learning path adapted to their needs.

Assessment Methods

Oral exam. Three-four questions on different periods of Roman Art. The examination will test the student's ability to recognise and place in the correct art-historical context the individual works of Roman art analysed in the course or discussed in the reference texts.
Students benefiting from the special inclusive teaching methods are asked to agree with the lecturer on customised examination methods.
