The course aims to provide students: 1. a good knowledge of stem cell populations, from diverse origins, and their main cellular/molecular characteristics.
2. a good understanding of the biological applications of stem cell biology, in the context of basic as well as translational research.
3. a good awareness of the topical developments around the stem cell and cell therapy fields.
4. the ability to apply the acquired knowledge in order to synthesise and interpret the scientific results presented in selected relevant scientific literature.
Prerequisiti
Good knowledge of biological mechanisms related to the cell cycle; embryogenesis; DNA structure and replication; transcription; translation; apoptosis; cell signalling. Good knowledge of the cellular and molecular techniques applicable to the characterization and manipulation of cell populations.
Metodi didattici
Lectures supported by slide presentations, and for some topics the use of multimedia animations.
Verifica Apprendimento
The exam consists of a written test with a mix of questions such as multiple choice questions and open-ended questions. The student has to demonstrate not only knowledge of the topics covered but also the ability to link these together.
Testi
Scientific articles and reviews from selected international journals.
