The course offers a detailed analysis of peninsular Spanish syntax of the verb (use of tenses and moods); elements about American variety will also be offered. The approach is a contrastive and descriptive one, and it's focused on the dialectics between language use and grammar rule, and on textual analysis.
Course Prerequisites
Students must have passed "Spanish Language 1" before, whilst CEL activities do not undergo any restriction.
Teaching Methods
Lectures, with linguistic analysis of oral and written Spanish texts
Assessment Methods
Written exam with open answers in Spanish (Theoretical questions on grammar + a text analysis question on an essay excerpt from the handbook "Saggistica spagnola del Novecento"). The course is integrated by language practices of Spanish, which are held all the year long by a native speaker collaborator (CEL). For any information about their language learning, contacting prof. Lodi is recommended. Practices program includes: revision and improving of first year program, verbs morphology (completion), verbal syntax (introduction). It is necessary to pass all the CEL tests before taking the exam. CEL test includes the following exercises: dictation, grammar, translation, essay. Students who attend at least 70% of the language practices, may stand the intermediate/partial tests (before Christmas holidays + end of fourth term). Passing the three intermediate tests exempts from the final test, except in the case students want to improve their mark (renouncing to the results of the intermediate tests). The knowledge of spoken Spanish will be verified in a few minutes conversation before the exam; such conversation will deal with: two novels by Juan Marsé: ("El amante bilngüe", "últimas tardes con Teresa"), + the Spanish texts included in the volume "Saggistica spagnola del Novecento" (chapter 5: see bibliography). (compulsory and detailed readings).
