Syllabus
Course Objectives
At the end of the three-year course, students will have developed a solid competence in the use of spoken and written language and in the analysis of contemporary English at the level of phonetics and phonology, morphology, lexis, semantics, syntax, text and discourse, with pragmatic and sociolinguistic contextualizations.

The course aims at developing lexico-grammatical competence at B2+ CEFR level. The course aims at developing a wide variety of linguistic and metalinguistic skills related syntax, semantics and pragmatics.

Course Prerequisites
Students must have a competence at B2 level of the CEFR; Students from the course in Foreign Languages and Cultures must have passed Lingua inglese 1. All students are encouraged to carry out self-study activities regularly at the Language Centre. Erasmus students and international exchange students will be admitted to the course only if the can attend for the whole academic year (October-June/July).

Lectures, classwork with guided tasks, tutorials.
Assessment Methods
Oral examination and preliminary tests
In the oral examination students will be assessed on the linguistic competence attained with reference to the course contents and objectives. In order to sit the oral examination students will have to pass a holistic test, in the form of a test with exercises of linguistic analysis, which assesses the attained language knowledge holistically, and the CELs’ preliminary tests (grammar and lexis, summary writing/report writing, listening test, oral production). The cloze test and the CELs’ preliminary tests are held in the Summer, Autumn and Winter sessions.
Students who regularly attend CELs' classes (at least 70%) will be able to choose the in itinere evaluation (assessments). Non-attending students (those who will not reach 70% of CELs' classes) will have to sit all the assessment tests in the form of a global test held in the Summer, Autumn and Winter sessions.
No dictionaries are allowed in the assessments.
Students are not allowed to sit the final oral exam unless they have previously passed the holistic test and the CELs’ preliminary tests.

Contents
The teaching programme consists in the main course, taking place in the second semester, and supplementary classes throughout the academic year run by CELs (see below). The course will focus on the syntax of the clause, including marked and unmarked word order (e.g. cleft sentences, dislocations, inversion), types of subordinate clauses (complement c., adverbial c. and relative c. in their finite and non-finite realizations); aspects of semantics (e.g. sense relations, collocations, multi-word expressions, polisemy, metaphor). Part of the course will be devoted to the notions of deixis, speech act, presupposition, the main models of politeness and impoliteness.
The teaching programme also includes year long classes taught by Collaboratori ed Esperti Linguistici (CEL) in the first and second semesters. Throughout the course students will do listening, speaking, reading and writing activities aimed at developing language proficiency and language awareness (at B2/C1 proficiency level). More info on the CEL classes are available on the website of the Language Centre (Centro Linguistico d'Ateneo).
