Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims at the acquisition of a basic knowledge of Germanic linguistics and history and culture of the Germanic Middle Ages. In the second part of the course, medieval Germanic literary texts will be analyzed, from a linguistic, philological and literary point of view. Students will gain therefore an understanding of the diachronic functioning of the modern languages and a knowledge of the medieval origins -regarding history, culture, literature- of european societies.

Course Prerequisites

A knowledge of general linguistics is required

Teaching Methods

Lectures in which, in interaction with the students, topics will be dealt with critically and medieval texts in the Germanic languages, using a philological approach, will be read, translated and commented.

Assessment Methods

Part A: An oral examination will ascertain the knowledge of Germanic linguistics and Germanic history and culture of the Middle Ages. For the part concerning Germanic Linguistics a written test (preliminary to the oral exam) will ascertain the knowledge of the operating systems of the languages and the ability of recognizing the phonetic changes from Indoeuropean to Old English and High German. Part B: an oral examination will test the ability of contextualizing, reading, translating and commenting the medieval texts analyzed during the course.

Contents

Part I (a) The course aims at the acquisition of a basic knowledge of Germanic linguistics and medieval Germanic history and culture. As for linguistics, aspects of the phonetics of the Germanic languages will be studied; the student will be grounded in the historical and comparative study of these languages. As for morphology, the verb system and the classes of the strong verbs will be studied. As for the historical and cultural part, the various areas of the Germanic world will be introduced (Gothic, Anglo-Saxon, Old German, Old Norse). Part II (b): Heroic and Elegiac poetry of the Germanic Middle Ages. The course introduces students to the interweaving of genres, the heroic and the elegiac, in the poetry of the Germanic Middle Ages. The literary, historical, cultural context of medieval literary works such as The 'Old English Elegies', 'Beowulf', the German 'Hildebrandslied' and poems from the Old Norse 'Poetic Edda' will be presented; selected passages will be read, translated, and philologically analyzed.
