Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to explore some philosophical issues linked to the relationship between theory and praxis in Kant’s and Fichte’s transcendental philosophy. By the end of the course, students are expected to:
-have acquired knowledge of the philosophical issues at stake in the comparison of the authors studied during the course;
-have acquired an adequate conceptual vocabulary both in order to be able to talk about the authors and the issues addressed and as a tool to approach the study of philosophical issues subsequent to those addressed by the authors studied;
- have acquired the ability to contextualise historically the philosophers discussed during the lessons, as well as to place them in dialogue con the main critical interpretations.

Course Prerequisites

Students should possess adequate knowledge of the main authors and philosophical currents of the XVIII-XIX centuries – specially of the Classical German Philosophy – certified by having already obtained at least 6 CFU in History of Contemporary Philosophy. Students lacking this requisite will need to arrange a preliminary interview with the lecturer on these topics.

Teaching Methods

Seminar sessions, based on reading and commenting on the selected extracts, supported by Powerpoint presentations.
Attendance and an active participation of the students will be encouraged. They will be asked to make short presentations of texts related to either primary or critical literature.

Assessment Methods

Written exam. The test consists of a written paper, which has to investigate one or more issues discussed during the lessons.
The topic of the paper can be chosen by the students, based on their interests; however, students are required to agree this topic with the lecturer before the writing and delivery of the paper.
The final mark, expressed as a fraction of 30, reflects the acquired knowledge, as well as the appropriateness of the exposition, and the terminological precision demonstrated by the student.

Texts

Passages from the following texts will be selected and read: I. Kant, Critica della ragion pura (a c. di P. Chiodi), UTET, Torino 1967; I. Kant, Per la pace perpetua, in Id., Scritti di storia, politica e diritto (a c. di F. Gonnelli), Laterza, Roma-Bari 2007. Alfieri), Laterza, Roma-Bari 1974. Further mandatory bibliography: M. Mori, Studi kantiani, Il Mulino, Bologna 2017 (ch. I-VI); Supplementary texts and texts that are not commercially available will be uploaded on Kiro.

Contents

Transcendental philosophy and revolution. The starting point of the course is Kant’s assertion that criticism involves a “sudden revolution in the way of thinking” and aims to explore the relationship between the transcendental concept of reason and philosophy and revolution, both on a theoretical and practical-political level. We will focus our attention on two thinkers: Kant and Fichte. While for the Königsberg philosopher revolution seems to take on a positive meaning in the theoretical and moral (individual) sphere, but a negative one in the practical-political sphere, the author of the Grundlage der gesammten Wissenschaftslehre immediately identifies transcendental philosophy and the French Revolution, presenting them as two sides of the same upheaval that will lead to the realization of individual and collective freedom. The aim is to investigate, in both authors, the relationship between theory and praxis, based on their interpretation of the French revolution.
