Students should be able to recognise the specific characteristics of regional artistic production (XVth- XVIIIth centuries), in relation to the evolution of art and architecture in the main national artistic centres (Rome, Florence, Venice). They must be able to read, understand and illustrate individual works, buildings or frescoes, with particular attention to the historical and cultural context of Lombardy.
Course Prerequisites
The History of Art in Lombardia course requires the student to be familiar with the general outlines of Italian art and architecture from the 15th to the 18th century and to use the technical terminology specific to the art-historical discipline. The course is organised for students attending the two-year master's degree course. Students in the three-year degree course in Literature and Cultural Heritage who intend to take the course must meet the requirements and have already passed the exams in Medieval Art History and Modern Art History.
Teaching Methods
Lectures with projection of power-point images, available later on the Kiro platform. The lectures may be supplemented by visits to the monuments.
Assessment Methods
The candidate will have to comment with appropriate terminology the images of the power points projected during the lectures and available on the KIRO website of the University. It will also have to contextualize the works using the historiographic sources analyzed during the lessons and the recommended critical bibliography.

Contents
The course will examine the main architectural and figurative manifestations that characterised the Duchy of Milan during the first three decades of Spanish rule (1535-1565), until the arrival of Archbishop Carlo Borromeo in Milan. This period saw a generational change in the arts and the arrival in Milan of foreign artists, trained in Venice or central Italy, whose presence brought about a renewal of local tradition and placed Milan within the international orbit of the Empire of Charles V.
